The Unremitting Pursuit
St John 21:17
This is the genesis of love. The love of God is intrinsic; it is inherent to His character. Upon receiving the Holy Spirit, we are united with God, resulting in the manifestation of His love within us. The union of the soul with God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not the culmination; rather, the ultimate goal is to achieve oneness with the Father, as exemplified by Jesus. What type of unity did Jesus Christ possess with the Father? The unity is such that the Father dispatched Him to be sacrificed for us, and He states, “As the Father has sent Me, so I send you.”
Peter now comprehends, through the Lord's poignant inquiry, that he does not love Him; subsequently arises the directive, "Spend it out." Do not proclaim your love for Me or extol the extraordinary freedom you have experienced; instead, "Feed My Sheep." Jesus possesses remarkably amusing sheep, some disheveled and soiled, some clumsy and aggressive, and others that have wandered off course! It is impossible to exhaust God's love, and it is equally impossible to deplete that love within me if it originates from the singular source.
The love of God disregards the distinctions of natural personality. If I love my Lord, I must not be influenced by my natural temperament; my duty is to nurture His flock. This commission offers no respite. Exercise caution against mimicking the love of God by just natural human empathy, as this may culminate in the blasphemy of twelve aspects of the divine.
1. Triadic Inquiry of Peter - Jesus interrogates Peter thrice, reflecting Peter's three denials, representing restoration and reaffirmation of his position.
2. Peter's Emotional Response - Peter is distressed by being questioned a third time, demonstrating his profound guilt and genuine affection for Jesus.
3. Divine Knowledge - Peter recognizes Jesus’ omniscience by stating, “Lord, thou knowest all things,” thereby conveying his trust in Christ’s comprehension of his heart.
4. Call to Shepherding - Jesus instructs Peter to “Feed my sheep,” indicating his responsibility as a leader and guardian of the faithful (the Church).
5. Love as a Criterion for Ministry — Jesus underscores that authentic ministry arises from sincere love for Him, rather than mere duty or obligation.
6. Restoration and Commissioning — This section emphasizes Christ's readiness to restore and commission individuals who have faltered, exemplifying grace and redemption.
