Subordinate Doubts Regarding Jesus
St John 4:11
I am astounded by the marvels of divine pronouncements, yet it is unreasonable for me to embody them in the minutiae of my existence. When confronted with Jesus Christ on His own merits, our disposition reflects a sanctimonious superiority—Your ideas are lofty and commendable, yet in practical application, they are unattainable. Each individual contemplates Jesus in a distinct manner. These apprehensions over Jesus originate from the bemused inquiries posed to us when we discuss our dealings with God: Where will you obtain your funds?
How will you be cared for? Or they start from ourselves when we tell Jesus that our case is a bit too complex for Him. While it is commendable to advocate for “Trust in the Lord,” one must contend with the necessities of life, and Jesus lacks the means to provide for our needs. Be cautious of the sanctimonious deception within you that asserts, "I harbor no doubts regarding Jesus, only regarding myself." None of us have doubts about ourselves; we are acutely aware of our limitations, however we do harbor uncertainties regarding Jesus. We are rather distressed by the notion that He possesses capabilities beyond our own.
My apprehensions stem from the necessity of introspection to ascertain how He would accomplish it. My inquiries arise from the depths of my own inadequacy. Should I recognize these doubts inside myself, I shall illuminate them and confess: “Lord, I have harbored uncertainties regarding You; I have not trusted in Your wisdom independent of my own; I have not acknowledged Your omnipotence beyond my limited comprehension.”
John 4:11 states the following (varies by translation):
"The woman said to Him, 'Sir, you possess no instrument to draw water, and the well is profound.' From where do You obtain such living water? (New King James Version)
This verse highlights several key points.
1. Human Limitation vs. Divine Provision - The lady senses Jesus’ lack of physical resources (no bucket) but does not yet realize His divine capacity to provide spiritual sustenance.
2. Depth of the Well vs. Depth of Spiritual Truth - The physical well is deep, but Jesus speaks of a much deeper, eternal supply of water—spiritual life through Him.
3. Misunderstanding of the Living Water - The lady originally takes Jesus’ statements in a literal sense, highlighting the gap between earthy reasoning and spiritual revelation.
4. Seeking a Source Beyond Human Means – She worries where Jesus will get this “living water,” reflecting a frequent human predisposition to distrust supernatural provision when it is not immediately obvious.
5. The Invitation to Greater Understanding – This verse sets the scenario for Jesus to reveal Himself as the source of eternal life, inviting the woman (and us) to look beyond the physical to the spiritual.
