The Commitment To Listening

1st Samuel 3:10

Having definitively heeded one directive from God does not imply that I will heed all of His utterances. I demonstrate my lack of love and respect for God through the insensitivity of my heart and mind to His words. When I love my buddy, I instinctively perceive his desires, and Jesus states, “You are my friends.” Have I contravened any directive from my Lord this week? Had I recognized it as an order from Jesus, I would not have willfully rebelled; but, many of us exhibit such disregard for God that we fail to perceive His words, as if He had never spoken at all.

The trajectory of my spiritual existence is characterized by a profound identification with Jesus Christ, enabling me to consistently perceive God's voice and to be assured of God's attentive response to me. If I am joined with Jesus Christ, I constantly perceive God through the practice of devotion. A lily, a tree, or a worker of God may communicate God's message to me. My inability to hear is impeded by my preoccupation with other matters. I am not unwilling to hear God; rather, I lack devotion in the appropriate context. I am committed to my pursuits, to service, to my beliefs, and although God may express His thoughts, I remain unresponsive to them.

The child's attitude is consistently, "Speak, Lord, for Your servant listens." If I have not developed the discipline of attentive listening, I can only perceive God's voice intermittently; at other times, I become preoccupied with many obligations, rendering myself impervious to Him, and I fail to embody the essence of a child’s life. Have I perceived the voice of God today?

1 Samuel 3:10 represents a crucial instance in which God summons Samuel, who replies with a receptive spirit. This verse highlights several crucial points of emphasis:

1. **God's Call to Samuel** - **Divine Initiation**: God serves as the initiator in this instance, summoning Samuel by name. This underscores that God's engagement in our lives is intentional and significant.

- **Personal Call**: God summons Samuel personally, demonstrating His intimate knowledge of each individual and His specific calling for their unique purposes.

2. **Samuel's Response** - **Receptiveness and Attentiveness**: Samuel replies, "Speak, for Your servant is listening." This demonstrates his preparedness and receptiveness to receive guidance from God. It urges adherents to have an open heart and mind, prepared to receive divine communication.

- **Servanthood**: Samuel's identification as a "servant" exemplifies humility and a disposition of obedience, acknowledging his position in regard to divine authority.

3. **The Significance of Heeding God** - **Engaged Listening**: Samuel’s readiness to listen underscores the necessity of being receptive to God’s words. This implies that perceiving God involves more than mere auditory capability; it demands spiritual vigilance.

- **Spiritual Discernment**: God's communication with Samuel in the subsequent verses illustrates the imperative of recognizing His voice in our lives, thereby creating an environment conducive to clarity and comprehension.

4. **Divine Timing and Presence** - **God’s Pursuit of Humanity**: The repeated calls to Samuel, preceding this passage, highlight God's unwavering persistence in communicating with humanity. God persistently seeks to communicate with us, even while we may be oblivious to His voice.

- **The Divine Presence is Intimate**: God communicates directly rather than at a distance. He speaks out directly to Samuel, underscoring the intimate and immediate nature of God's presence.

5. **The Role of a Prophet** - **Samuel as a Prophet**: This instance signifies the inception of Samuel's prophetic vocation. God is distinguishing Samuel for His divine purposes, illustrating that God selects and summons individuals for particular roles in His kingdom.

- **Obedience Precedes Revelation**: Samuel's modest reply ("Speak, for Your servant is listening") indicates that genuine divine revelation frequently follows a stance of obedience. God expects us to heed and comply prior to disclosing other realities.

These arguments underscore the personal, intentional, and relational aspects of God's call, the imperative of attentive listening, and the necessity of obedience as a prerequisite for spiritual revelation.
