Proceed By Faith, Not By Sight

2nd Corinthians 5:7

This concise yet significant verse embodies a core tenet of the Christian faith: belief surpasses perception. The apostle Paul, in his epistle to the Corinthian church, juxtaposes the transitory essence of terrestrial existence with the everlasting truth of divine promises.

The expression "we walk by faith" denotes a continuous journey. Faith is not a singular decision but an ongoing lifestyle. Walking signifies movement, advancement, and faith that each stride is directed by God. Abraham demonstrated this trust by departing from his homeland without knowledge of his destination (Hebrews 11:8).

“Not by sight” contests the inherent inclination to depend on the visible, rational, or physical. Vision embodies human comprehension, situations, and sentiments. If adherents solely relied on empirical evidence, they would grapple with uncertainty and trepidation. The Israelites stopped at the threshold of the Promised Land due to their perception of giants instead of recognizing God's power (Numbers 13:31-33).

Faith necessitates trust in God's Word over our circumstances. Hebrews 11:1 characterizes faith as “the substance of things anticipated, the evidence of things unseen.” Genuine faith trusts in God's promises, even when they appear remote or unattainable.

This verse also relates to an eternal perspective. Paul's overarching theme in 2 Corinthians 5 is that believers ought to concentrate on celestial realities rather than terrestrial tribulations. The challenges of life might render faith arduous, yet to walk by faith entails trusting in God's plan beyond our present circumstances.

This text is essential for contemporary believers confronting uncertainty, adversity, or decisions necessitating faith in God's invisible guidance. Walking by faith entails adhering to God's commands despite the absence of immediate outcomes, maintaining belief in His benevolence under adversity, and relying on His direction even when the course is ambiguous.

1. Faith constitutes a journey - It necessitates ongoing faith and progression, rather than inertia.

2. Vision is misleading — Human logic frequently opposes heavenly veracity.

3. God's promises surpass circumstances — His Word stays immutable irrespective of our observations.

4. Faith necessitates action - Trusting God entails advancing while lacking complete clarity.

5. An eternal viewpoint fosters tranquility - Concentrating on God's plan aids in traversing terrestrial challenges.
