The Pursuit of Power

St John 13:36

Jesus responded, "At this moment, you are unable to accompany me to my destination, but you will be able to do so later." The reference is from the book of John, chapter 13, verse 36.

"After uttering these words, He instructed him, 'Accompany me'." The reference is to John 21:19. Three years prior, Jesus had said the words, "Follow Me" (Matthew 4:19), and Peter obediently complied without any doubt. He was strongly drawn to Jesus and did not require assistance from the Holy Spirit to do so. Subsequently, he arrived at the location where he renounced his association with Jesus, causing his heart to shatter. Subsequently, Joseph was bestowed with the Holy Spirit and Jesus reiterated, "Proceed in my footsteps" (John 21:19). Currently, there is no individual positioned ahead of Peter, with the exception of the divine figure, the Lord Jesus Christ. The initial "Follow Me" was not enigmatic; it was an exterior act of following. Jesus is currently requesting an interior act of surrender and sacrifice (see to John 21:18).

Peter made a series of false statements and expressed strong disapproval towards Jesus during the period mentioned in Matthew 26:69-75. However, he reached a point where he entirely exhausted his own resources and self-reliance. He had lost all trust in any aspect of his own being. Having reached a level of extreme poverty, he was now prepared to accept everything that the resurrected Lord had in store for him. "...He exhaled upon them and instructed them, 'Accept the Divine Spirit' " The reference is to John 20:22. Irrespective of any alterations that God may have made in you, it is crucial not to depend on them. Exclusively establish your foundation on the individual known as the Lord Jesus Christ, and rely solely on the spiritual power that He bestows.

Our inability to fulfill our commitments and resolutions leads to their ultimate rejection. Upon reaching the absolute limit of our mental and emotional capacity, we become capable of "receiving the Holy Spirit." The concept behind "Receive the Holy Spirit" is that of a forceful incursion. The sole authority governing the trajectory of your life is now exclusively vested in the divine figure of the Lord Jesus Christ.
